History of the department:
The department of nervous diseases Belarusian Institute for Doctors’ Improvement was founded in 1947. According to the regulations of 1963 it was called the department of neurology and physiotherapy. Academician Markov D.A. had been head of the department for 26 years.
For many years the scientific work covered the questions of demyelinating nervous system diseases (etiology, pathogeny, diagnostics and treatment). The department of neuropathology together with the Scientific and Research Institute of Neurology, neurosurgery and Physiotherapy and the Laboratory of Pathophysiology of the Institute of Physiology was in charge of research work of this problem. The results of the researches were reported at the symposiums and conferences in Minsk in 1965, in 1970 and in 1974. At that time scientific researches dealt with the actual problems of neurology: neurological syndromes of the chronic arterial limb deficiency; roles of venous- lymphatic and system disorders in pathogeny of neurological manifestations of spinal osteochondrosis; processes of de- and remielinization at cute and chronic demyelinating, inflammatory and vascular diseases of nervous system (of musculotonic syndromes of neck and lumbar osteochondrosis).
From 1973 to 1991 the department was headed by the Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Leonovich ?. L. In 1991 - 2004 the department was headed by the Doctor of Medical Sciences, professor Fillipovich N.F.
From 2000 the course of neurosurgery was organized. From 2004 the department was renamed into the department of neurology and neurosurgery of the Belarussian Medical Academy of Post-Graduate Education.
