History of the department
The department started its work in November, 1972.
The first head of the department was professor P.P.Volkov (1972-1993). The seventies were marked by the development of narcological service. A.F. Skugarevsky, an associate professor, was the first narcologist in Belarus. Later he became a professor, and in 1993 became head of the department.
From 1995 to the present time professor R.A. Evsegneev has been working as a head of the department. Candidate’s dissertation of R.A. Evsegneev covers the questions of mental deficiency treatment, Doctor’s dissertation – clinic and genetic research of affective and schizoaffective psychosis. Since the time professor R.A. Evsegneev became the head of the department there has been a significant development which was extremely necessary because of some changes in psychiatry, practice and studies. New teaching programs, and also new cycles for different categories of doctors – primary specialization for trainees, advanced training courses for the teaching staff of Medical Universities, doctors of primary healthcare, narcologists were created.
 Significant changes affected not only the contents, but also forms of teaching. The department is well-equipped with modern technological means of teaching – projection facilities, video equipment, computers. A new attestation computer program for psychiatrists and narcologists was developed. Professor R.A. Evsegneev organized and headed The Belarusian Psychiatric Association, which in 1996 became the part of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA), which made it possible for Belarusian psychiatrists to participate and be involved into the world psychiatric processes. At this period the department started its participation in the WPA Educational Program in the field of depression detection and treatment, in WHO Belarusian – Dutch project on doctors’ training in the field of dependences.
R.A. Evsegneev guides Candidate’s dissertations devoted to gender peculiarities of suicidal behavior, suicidal behavior with dependence from psychoactive substances, psychiatric expertise, Doctor’s dissertation devoted to suicidal behavior of patients in hospitals. R.A. Evsegneev is a chief editor of the magazine “Psychiatry”, president of the Belarusian Psychiatric Association, member of council of experts.
There is a Belarusian-Swedish project which is guided by professor R.A. Evsegneev and associate professor E.F. Lasy. The project is aimed at the training of graduate psychiatrists and education of GP’s in the field of suicidal behavior.
In 2009 the staff of the department completed the project “Syndrome of attention deficit and hyperactivity with patients suffered from alcohol and opioid dependence”. The staff makes a research work in the field of diagnostics of biopolar spectrum disorders. |
