History of the department
Preparation of phthisiatricians began in 1949. The department was created in 1954 and was headed by the Candidate of Medical Sciences, professor Samuil Alexsandrovich Agranovich. By this time assistants Z.K.Zagorskaya and M.I.Bobrovskaya had been working there. In 1963 Mikhail Nikolaevich Lomako, director of Scientific and Research Tuberculosis Institute became head of the department. In 1964 - 1983 the department was headed by professor Evgeny Borisovich Meve.
Since 1983 professor Valentin Sergeevich Korovkin has been working as a head of the department.

- Diagnostics and treatment of respiratory organ tuberculosis, the strategy DOTS (for phthisiatricians, roentgenologists, pulmonologists, phthisiopediatricians, physicians)

- Modern diagnostic and treatment methods of pneumonia (for physicians, pulmonologists, emergency doctors, district doctors)
- Diagnostics, treatment, prophylaxis of lung tuberculosis among adults, teenagers and children (for phthisiatricians, phthisiopediatricians, physicians, pediatricians, district doctors)
- Clinic and roentgenologic diagnostics of lung diseases (for physicians, phthisiatricians, pulmonologists, roentgenologists, GPs, thoracic surgeons)
- Diagnostics, treatment and prophylaxis of lung tuberculosis among children and teenagers (for pediatricians, phthisiopediatricians, physicians, pulmonologists, phthisiatricians).

- Thoracic operations, dressing, drainings, punctures
- Bronchoscopy
- Roentgenoscopy and roentgenography
- Analysis of external respiration function
- Consultation and operation visits
 Scientific work of the department
At present at the department of phthisiopulmonology scientific researches are made on the following topic: «Improvement in diagnostics and treatment of tuberculosis and nonspecific respiratory organ diseases». This problem includes 7 scientific topics: «Organization of tuberculosis detection among children and adults», «Improvement in diagnostics and treatment of tuberculosis and nonspecific respiratory organ diseases», «Medication-stable lung tuberculosis», «Modern diagnostics, treatment and tuberculosis prophylaxis in penitentiary establishment», «Analysis of respiratory diseases prevalence which is the result of modern ecologo-geochemical conditions, «Surgery and treatment of chronic destructive tuberculosis forms».
Scientific and research work
Subject: «Improvement in diagnostics and treatment of tuberculosis and chronic nonspecific respiratory system diseases».
The staff of the department analyses peculiarities of clinical course of respiratory organ tuberculosis and lymphatic noodles among children in modern radio-ecological conditions.
Scientific researches on the following topics:
- Analysis of vaccination efficiency and Calmette-Guérin bacillus revaccination among children and teenagers in Belarus.
- Sarcoidosis of respiratory organs.
- Analysis of MBT drug sensitivity.
- Etiopathogenetic mechanisms of HOBL progressing.
- Analysis of inferior respiratory tracts.
The main target of the scientific work – improvement of diagnostics and treatment of tuberculosis and chronic nonspecific respiratory organ diseases.
