History of the department:
 The department of cardiology and rheumatology is a successor of traditions of one of the leading and oldest departments – therapy-1. The department was formed by a famous Belarusian scientist, academician B.I.Trusevich. Then A.D.Adensky-Pinchuk, a Belarusian scientist, became head of the department. Since 1970 the department had been headed by professor V.V.Gorbachev. In January1978 the department of therapy-1 was transformed into the department of cardiology and functional diagnostics. In 1991 professor A.G. Mrochek became a head of the department. Since July 2008 the department of cardiology and rheumatology has been headed by an associate professor ?.?. Pristrom.
The staff of the department made a research work in pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, arterial hypertension, neurocirculatory dystonia, obesity. A great research work was also made in lipid metabolic disorders, biochemistry of prostaglandins, functional disorders of blood corpuscles and their participation in aterotrombogenesis. A special attention was paid to the instrumental diagnostics of coronary heart disease, rhythm disturbances, and arterial hypertension.
Scientific elaborations of modern diagnostic and treatment methods of cardiological diseases are actively introduced and used in the practical work. The main target of the department is provision of cardiologists with advanced training. The staff of the department always participates in elaboration of scientific medical programs of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic, in work of expert Councils and Commissions.
Scientific work of the department:
- Ischemic heart disease, instable angina, myocardial infarction,
- Heart rhythm disturbances, differential diagnostics of supraventricular tachycardia,
- Evaluation of myocardium electric instability (late ventricle potentials, interval dispersion QTc), variability of heart rhythm,
- Evaluation of the condition of cardiovascular system with patients suffered from pancreatic diabetes,
- Research of cardiovascular pathology with the pregnant (with arterial hypertension, inborn and acquired valvular diseases),
- Dysplasia of connective tissue, diffuse connective tissue diseases,
- Antitrombus therapy, intravascular ultrasound, psychosomatic disorders with patients suffered from heart diseases rheumatic diseases,
- Evaluation of the condition of calcium metabolism with patients suffered from osteoporosis.
