History of the department
 The department was founded in 1980. The main task of the department is the refresher training of surgeons and endoscopists, teaching staff of emergency surgery, and also retraining in the following specialties:
- Surgery (surgeons in polyclinics, heads of surgical departments in hospitals, head doctors, residents (also foreigners), graduate students
- Endoscopy (endoscopists, heads of the departments in hospitals)
- Combustiology (doctors and heads of burns departments, hospital and polyclinic traumatologists, resuscitation specialists).
At present the department provides circles of advanced training in emergency surgery, diagnostic, treatment and operative endoscopy of gastrointestinal tract.
The staff of the department consists of 16 people: head of the department, professor, 3 associate professors, 3 assistants, 2 graduate students, 1 graduate student of postal tuition, 2 foreign residents, a foreign resident of postal tuition, 2 laboratory assistants.

Thus, at present the training courses are held in three clinics: in the 9th and 10th Minsk City Hospitals, there are courses of emergency surgery; staff is daily in charge of 240 patients in 4 surgical departments. The training courses of combustiology are held on the basis of the Republican Burn Center, which is situated in the 2d City Hospital.
Educational work
During the last 5 years there have been profound changes in the training system. The course duration has been reduced from 1 month to 2 weeks. There has been developed new teaching approaches: the lectures are read with the help of slide-presentations, multimedia projector, new computer and film classes are available for the doctors undergoing the training.
There is a huge amount of practical lessons held in endoscopic and dressing rooms, in wards, in operation rooms during operations with the comments of doctors. Some doctors who undergo the training assist operations. They also participate in daily ward rounds, consultations.
The doctors are tested with the help of so-called American Test Program, which includes situational tasks which should be fulfilled to evaluate the knowledge.
The staff of the department has invented a trainer for endovideosurgical operations which permits to perform manipulations with the help of instruments used at laparoscopic operations. All the doctors undergoing the course “Diagnostic and treatment endoscopy in emergency surgery” are trained with the help of this device.

• Endoscopic technologies of local hemostasis with patients suffered from gastroduodenal bleeding of ulcerous etiology.
• Treatment of destractive pancreatitis with arrosive hemorrhage.
• Endovideosurgical operations at ulcerous gastroduodenal bleeding.
• New approaches to the surgical treatment of parapapillar ulcer in emergency surgery.
• Analysis of drug effectiveness for enteral feeding with patients suffered from ulcers in gastrointestinal tract
• Development of dressing.
• Thermal injuries and skin grafting.
• Examination and treatment of patients with thermal injuries.
• Methods of physical hemostasis in abdominal surgery.
• Clinical trials of new drugs, devices and dressing.
