History of the department: Department of clinical hematology and transfusiology was founded in 1979 and has been functioning for 30 years. There have been refresher and retraining courses for the doctors of different specialties within this period. The department was founded by its first head - professor E.P. Ivanov (1979-1999). From the very foundation the department had become the main educational centre in gemostasiology for the Belarusian doctors, and till 1991 – for all the doctors of the Soviet Union.
From 2000 to 2007 the department was headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, A.L. Uss, who organized the training in transplantology, - “Chemotherapy in oncohaematology, stem cell transplantation”.
From 2007 to the present the department has been headed by Doctor of Medical Sciences, L.A. Smirnova. Under her guidance the department retains and multiplies the traditions of hematology and transfusiology.
The staff of the department has worked out unified programs of preparing and retraining of doctors in hematology and transfusiology. The lectures are given by leading specialists of the Republic.
In 1993 the Republic Center of Marrow Transplantation was opened and in 1994 the first marrow transplantation was made. During the further 7 years the number of auto- and allogenic marrow transplantation and primitive blood cell transplantation achieved the figure of more than 200.
The staff of the department underwent training in hospitals in England, Italy, Germany, Japan, France and Russia.
The scientific and practical work of the department includes: • Development and implementation of highly technological treatment methods of blood diseases and nonhaematological diseases with the help of chemotherapy and transplantation of hemopoietic and mesenchymal ctem cells; • Development and implementation of new diagnostic technologies and test-systems; • Development of prognosis methods and control over the chemo- and immunotherapy effectiveness;
The department collaborates side by side with the Republican Centre of Transplantology and Cell Biotechnologies, the Republican Scientific Center of Hematology and Transfusiology, the Belarusian Medical University, the Republican Scientific Center of Child’s Oncohaematology, establishments of practical healthcare.
Aims of the department: • Development of methodological recommendations, tutorials of hematology. • Development of the effectiveness of doctors’ work (obstetrician- gynecologists, surgeons, resuscitation specialists, physicians, laboratory assistants, hematologists) Development and implementation of high-tech treatment and diagnostic methods • High-skill consultative work. • Development and implementation of high-technology methods of diagnostics and treatment.
