History of the department
The department of pediatric surgery was founded in 1964 under the guidance of professor Sergey Leonidovich Libov.
In1966 -1988 the department was headed by professor Oleg Severyanovich Misharev. Professor ?.S. Misharev gave consideration to the development and improvement of surgical help to children, especially to newborn babies with heart and gastrointestinal tract diseases, babies suffered from peritonitis, sharp hematogenic osteomyelitis and purulo-septic diseases. A great consideration was paid to the questions of preoperative preparation of the sick and intensive therapy.
In 1988–1993 the department was headed by professor Leonid Evgenievich Kotovich.
 The staff of the department makes a huge treatment and consultation work, performs difficult operations, consuls patients at the departments of the Minsk Child Surgical Center and Minsk Regional Child Clinical Hospital.
The staff of the course of child surgery in BelMAPO actively participated in the organization of Child Cardiosurgical Center in Minsk.
The staff of the department participated in the organization of Republican conferences and seminars on the actual questions of child surgery (Grodno 2001, Mogilev 2005 and others). They took part and to made reports at International Congresses of Surgeons (Garburg 1993, Berlin1993, Belostok1999, 2005, Gdansk 2000, Riga 2000, 2006, Kaunas 2002, Vrotslav 2003, Tartu 2004, Lodz 2006).
The main directions of work at the department nowadays are the following:
• Surgery of esophagus with children,
• Malformation surgery with newborns,
• Diseases and malformations of anorectal area,
• Low-invasive (endoscopic) surgery at the pathology of abdominal cavity and thoracic cavity with children,
• Correction of congenital heart diseases with children.
